Microsoft 365 E5

Microsoft 365 E5 is Microsoft 365 E3 plus the security and compliance layer that E3 leaves out. On identity it upgrades Entra ID P1 to P2, which is what brings Privileged Identity Management, Identity Protection, risk-based Conditional Access, access reviews and entitlement management. On endpoints it moves from Defender for Endpoint Plan 1 to Plan 2, adding endpoint detection and response, automated investigation and remediation, threat and vulnerability management, and advanced hunting over six months of data. On email it moves to Defender for Office 365 Plan 2. On compliance it adds Insider Risk Management, Communication Compliance, Advanced Audit and eDiscovery that can delete.

What it is

Microsoft 365 E5 is the full enterprise plan. It contains everything in E3 and replaces each foundational security component with its complete version, then adds the compliance products E3 does not have at all.

Who it is for

Organisations that need to detect and investigate, not only prevent: those with a security team or a managed provider acting on the telemetry, and those under regulatory obligations that require insider risk controls, long audit retention or defensible eDiscovery.

Key capabilities

  • Everything in Microsoft 365 E3
  • Microsoft Entra ID P2: Privileged Identity Management, Identity Protection, risk-based Conditional Access, access reviews, entitlement management
  • Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Plan 2: endpoint detection and response, automated investigation and remediation, threat and vulnerability management, advanced hunting across six months of data
  • Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 2
  • Microsoft Intune Plan 1 and Plan 2
  • Advanced Microsoft Purview: Insider Risk Management, Communication Compliance, Advanced Audit with up to ten year retention, eDiscovery that can search and delete, automatic retention labels
  • Microsoft Defender XDR across identity, endpoint, email and cloud apps

How to judge the step up from E3

The honest test is whether anyone will act on what E5 produces. Endpoint detection and response, Identity Protection and Insider Risk Management all generate signals that need a person or a service to triage them. An organisation with nobody in that role buys capability it will not use. An organisation under DORA or NIS2 obligations, or one that must produce evidence to a regulator or a customer, usually finds the compliance half alone justifies the difference.

Requirements

No user minimum or maximum. Microsoft 365 Copilot is an add-on to E5, not part of it; it is bundled only in Microsoft 365 E7.

FAQ
What does E5 add over E3?

Entra ID P2 in place of P1, Defender for Endpoint Plan 2 in place of Plan 1, Defender for Office 365 Plan 2, Intune Plan 2 on top of Plan 1, and the advanced Purview layer: Insider Risk Management, Communication Compliance, Advanced Audit and eDiscovery that can delete.

Do I need E5 to get risk-based Conditional Access?

You need Microsoft Entra ID P2, which E5 includes. Risk-based Conditional Access depends on Microsoft Entra ID Protection, which is a P2 feature. Entra ID P2 can also be licensed separately on top of E3.

Is E5 worth it without a security team?

Its detection products produce signals that someone has to triage. Endpoint detection and response, Identity Protection and Insider Risk Management all assume a responder, in house or a provider. Without one, the compliance half is usually the stronger justification.

How long does E5 keep endpoint data?

Defender for Endpoint Plan 2 retains six months of data for advanced hunting, which is what lets an investigation trace an incident back to its start.

Does E5 include Microsoft 365 Copilot?

No. Copilot is a separate add-on for E3 and E5. It is included only in Microsoft 365 E7, alongside the Microsoft Entra Suite and Agent 365.
