Exchange Online Archiving for Exchange Server
This is the archiving product for organisations whose primary mailboxes are still on an Exchange server. It attaches a cloud archive to an on-premises mailbox, so long-tail mail leaves the server without leaving the organisation. Two conditions decide whether it applies. The primary mailbox must sit on a supported version of Exchange Server, and where on-premises mailboxes exist a hybrid deployment is required to connect the two. It is a different product from Exchange Online Archiving for Exchange Online, which attaches to mailboxes already hosted in Exchange Online. Buying the wrong one of the two is the common mistake here.
What it is
Exchange Online Archiving for Exchange Server gives a cloud-based archive mailbox to a user whose primary mailbox is on an on-premises Exchange server. The archive lives in Microsoft's cloud; the primary mailbox does not move.
Who it is for
Organisations still running Exchange on-premises, whose mailbox stores are growing faster than the storage under them, and who want retention and hold capability without a full migration first.
Requirements
The primary mailbox must be on a supported version of Exchange Server. Where on-premises mailboxes exist, a hybrid deployment is required to connect the on-premises organisation to Exchange Online. A hybrid deployment is not required for cloud-only organisations, but a cloud-only organisation needs the other product anyway.
Which of the two products you need
Microsoft publishes two Exchange Online Archiving products and they are not interchangeable:
- For Exchange Server, this one, for primary mailboxes on an on-premises Exchange server
- For Exchange Online, for primary mailboxes already hosted in Exchange Online, attaching to plans such as Exchange Online Plan 1, Kiosk, Microsoft 365 Business Basic and Standard, Office 365 E1 and Microsoft 365 F3
It is also available through the Exchange Enterprise CAL Suite for on-premises Exchange organisations holding those licences.

Two capability limits specific to this product
Access to the cloud archive through on-premises Outlook on the web has been discontinued. And In-Place eDiscovery across the boundary is no longer supported in current Exchange hybrid deployments, so on-premises and cloud mailboxes must be searched separately.
How is this different from Exchange Online Archiving for Exchange Online?
This one is for primary mailboxes on an on-premises Exchange server. The other is for mailboxes already hosted in Exchange Online and attaches to plans such as Exchange Online Plan 1, Kiosk, Microsoft 365 Business Basic and Standard, Office 365 E1 and Microsoft 365 F3. Buying the wrong one is the common mistake.
Do I need a hybrid deployment?
Where on-premises mailboxes exist, yes. A hybrid deployment connects the on-premises organisation to Exchange Online so the archive can attach. It is not required for cloud-only organisations, which need the other product in any case.
Can users reach the archive from on-premises Outlook on the web?
No. Cloud archive mailbox access through on-premises Outlook on the web has been retired. Outlook remains supported.
Can I run one eDiscovery search across both?
Not in current Exchange hybrid deployments. In-Place eDiscovery across the boundary is no longer supported, so on-premises and cloud mailboxes have to be searched separately.
Is it included with any on-premises licence?
It is available for on-premises Exchange organisations through the Exchange Enterprise CAL Suite. Check whether those CALs are already held before buying it separately.
