Microsoft 365 Business Standard covers the Microsoft 365 Apps installed across devices, business email, cloud file storage, and Microsoft Teams for chat and meetings. It is aimed at organisations of up to 300 users. It is a productivity plan rather than a security plan: it does not carry Microsoft Defender for Business, Microsoft Defender for Office 365, Microsoft Entra ID P1 or Microsoft Intune Plan 1. Those four sit in Microsoft 365 Business Premium, which contains everything in Business Standard on top of them. Knowing which of the two lines a requirement falls on is usually the whole decision between these plans.
What it is
Microsoft 365 Business Standard is the middle plan in Microsoft's small and medium business range. It provides the desktop and web Office applications, business email and calendaring, cloud file storage, and Microsoft Teams.
Who it is for
Organisations of up to 300 users that need everyday productivity software and business email, and that handle identity and device security through other means or do not yet need the Microsoft security products.

What is not included
Business Standard does not include Microsoft Defender for Business, Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 1, Microsoft Entra ID P1 or Microsoft Intune Plan 1. In practice this means no Conditional Access, and no self-service password reset with writeback to an on-premises directory, which Microsoft documents as needing Microsoft Entra ID P1 or Business Premium. Microsoft Defender for Business can be bought as a standalone licence alongside Business Standard for organisations under 300 users.

What is the difference between Business Standard and Business Premium?
Business Premium contains everything in Business Standard and adds Microsoft Defender for Business, Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 1, Microsoft Entra ID P1 and Microsoft Intune Plan 1, plus Microsoft Purview information protection and data loss prevention.
Can I use Conditional Access with Business Standard?
No. Conditional Access is a Microsoft Entra ID P1 capability. It is available with Microsoft 365 Business Premium, or by licensing Microsoft Entra ID P1 separately.
Does Business Standard support self-service password reset?
It supports password reset for cloud-only accounts. Writing a reset back to an on-premises directory is not supported on Business Standard and requires Microsoft Entra ID P1, P2, or Microsoft 365 Business Premium.
Can I add endpoint security to Business Standard?
Yes. Microsoft Defender for Business is available as a standalone licence for organisations of up to 300 users, including those on Microsoft 365 Business Standard.
