Endpoint Privilege Management lets users run as standard accounts without local administrator rights, while still completing the specific tasks your organisation approves that require elevation. It is the practical answer to the gap between a security baseline that says remove local admin and a help desk that cannot function once you do. It reports on both managed and unmanaged file elevations across the estate. Since July 2026 it is included in Microsoft 365 E5 and E7, so check what you hold before buying it. It is also in the Microsoft Intune Suite, and available as a standalone add-on on top of Intune Plan 1 or Plan 2.

Microsoft Intune Endpoint Privilege Management removes standing local administrator rights without removing the ability to get work done. Approved tasks that need elevation still run; everything else does not.

Any organisation whose security baseline calls for least privilege on endpoints and whose previous attempt at it collapsed under support tickets. Also anyone who needs to evidence that local administrator rights are not standing.
Check your plan first
Since July 2026, Microsoft 365 E5 and E7 include Endpoint Privilege Management, along with Microsoft Cloud PKI and Enterprise Application Management. Microsoft 365 E3 does not: E3 gets Intune Plan 2, Remote Help and Advanced Analytics, but not this. So on E5 or E7 this add-on adds nothing, and on E3 it is a genuine purchase.

Requirements

Why the reporting matters as much as the enforcement
The reports cover unmanaged elevations as well as managed ones, which is how you find the software that quietly needed administrator rights all along. Removing local admin without that visibility is how the first attempt usually fails.
Do I already have Endpoint Privilege Management?
If the tenant is on Microsoft 365 E5 or E7, yes, since July 2026. Microsoft 365 E3 does not include it: E3 gets Intune Plan 2, Remote Help and Advanced Analytics, but not Endpoint Privilege Management, Microsoft Cloud PKI or Enterprise Application Management.
What does it need underneath it?
Microsoft Intune Plan 1 or Plan 2. It is an add-on to the endpoint management service, not a replacement for it.
Do I have to buy the whole Intune Suite to get it?
No. It is included in the Suite but also sold as a standalone add-on, so a single requirement does not force the whole Suite.
What happens to software that genuinely needs administrator rights?
Elevation rules let approved tasks complete. The reporting covers unmanaged elevations as well, which is how you discover what actually needed those rights before you enforce the change.
Does it help with evidencing least privilege?
It produces the record. Reports show elevations across managed and unmanaged files, which is a stronger answer to an auditor than a policy document asserting that local admin was removed.
